Part of Tyne and Wear, the conurbation of Tyneside is a primarily industrial area in the north east of England that is centred around Newcastle upon Tyne, but also includes Gateshead and North and South Shields.
All four towns have much in the way of attractions to offer visitors, as well as being extremely culturally diverse.
Nowadays Tyneside is making a name for itself as a regional centre for the arts, with several showpiece venues to choose from.
There exists a long-standing yet friendly rivalry between the 'Geordies' of Newcastle and the 'Maccams' of Sunderland, but the cities have a lot more that connects them than divides them. Both cities suffered greatly during the industrial downturn of the 1980's and yet have risen from the ashes to become the thriving communities we see today.
